The feeding of wheat and Bengal gram diets for 15 days to 2-wk old female albino rats caused a significant decrease in brain free amino acids (aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glutamine and GABA) levels with a significant increase in alanine compared to the levels on the isonitrogenous control diet (10% casein diet). The supplementations of lysine in wheat and of the methionine, cystine and tryptophan in the Bengal gram diets restored levels of these amino acids similar to those on control diet. On a 20% casein diet, glutamine and GABA concentrations were significantly higher without any alterations in aspartic acid, glutamic acid and alanine compared to the observations on 10% casein diet.
