Hyperfiltration due to amino and keto acid supplements of low-protein diets: influence on proteinuria

After subtotal nephrectomy 12 male Sprague-Dawley rats with stable uraemia had a diet containing 8% protein supplemented by keto acids alone in the initial and final 10-day periods and by 1 of 3 commercial preparations consisting of amino acids alone or with keto acids in the others. The supplements containing amino acids, especially in large amounts, produced clear increases in proteinuria and albuminuria. Any effect of keto acids alone was considered negligible.
