Thin layer gel filtration using Sephadex G-50 in 6M guanidine hydrochloride was evaluated for estimating the MW of peptides and glycopeptides with MW < 10,000. A linear relationship between log MW and relative distance of migration was obtained for peptides and glycopeptides ranging in MW from 1700-10,500 and from 1500-3300, respectively. The migration behavior of glycopeptides in the range of 1900-3300 daltons did not differ significantly from that of peptides, indicating that peptides can be used as calibration standards for the estimation of the MW of glycopeptides in this MW range and possibly beyond 3300. The procedure is rapid, simple, and requires only small amounts of sample (30-100 .mu.g); MW can be estimated with an average error of < 10%.
