The role of leukocytes in the pathogenesis of coagulation impairments in human patients with increased risk of intravascular thrombogenesis, and coagulating characteristics of leukocytes in 57 patients with chronic forms of ischemic heart disease and in healthy persons were examined. In healthy persons leukocytes manifested antithrombin, antiheparin and fibrin stabilizing effects; in patients with atherosclerosis the general coagulating activity of leukocytes was increased. Leukocytes in the latter group had the capability to change the coagulating potential in the direction of hypercoagulation. Patients examined in the period of exacerbation of chronic coronary insufficiency manifested the opposite tendency. Reduced activity of the thromboplastic factor resulted in decreased leukocyte coagulation activity and shortened recalcification time as a compensatory-adaptive reaction directed at elimination of the hypercoagulation syndrome.
