The relationship of blood hyper- and hypocoagulation to coronary atherosclerosis in patients was studied. Subjects had past histories of myocardial infarction, diffuse coronary atherosclerosis and circulatory insufficiency of various stages. A tendency towards hypercoagulation, increased blood fibrinogen level, significant decrease in blood fibrinolytic activity and increased concentrations of fibrin and fibrinogen degradation products. Hypocoagulation was expressed primarily in increased antithrombin activity. The latter was secondary, compensatory in natue and resulted from the effect of fibrinogen decomposition products on blood coagulation.
