Behavior of some blood coagulation parameters in angiographically documented coronary arteriosclerosis

The relationship between human atherosclerosis and modification of some coagulation parameters was investigated. The coagulation parameters investigated were antithrombin III (AT-III), factor XIII subunits A and S, factor VIII, .alpha.1-antitrypsin and .alpha.1-macroglobulin. The patients studied had coronary heart disease with angiographic evidence of single or multiple coronary stenosis. Patients with congenital heart disease, hypertensive disease and valvular heart disease were controls. Significant variations were seen only for AT-III activity. Decreased AT-III levels were related to the severity of coronary heart disease. No other parameters revealed significant differences. Other conditions, such as myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, diabetes mellitus and hypertensive disease, are not responsible for further variations in AT-III plasma concentration.
