The development of more sensitive methods for estimation of Fe status, with particular reference to women of childbearing age, is discussed. These methods, especially that of extrinsic labelling to estimate absorption of nonhaem Fe from a complete diet, have shown the importance of animal tissues and ascorbic acid in improving food Fe availability. Supplementation of food with Fe is also discussed.
