Attempts were made to check the applicability of the passive hemagglutination test (PHT) for determining .alpha.-hemolysin antibodies in human and animal sera. The study was done with sera from 71 healthy subjects, 91 patients with chronic staphylococcal infection and 30 rabbits. Persons with chronic staphylococcal disease and animals were immunized with staphylococcal toxoid to evaluate the applicability of the PHT for an assay of the dynamics of antibody production. PHT was performed by the Takatsy micromethod, using formolized and tanned sheep erythrocytes coated with staphylococcal .alpha.-hemolysin. The results were compared with those obtained by the routine hemolytic method. A correlation was observed between results obtained by the 2 methods. The PHT with erythrocytes coated with staphylococcal .alpha.-hemolysin was applicable for the determination of .alpha.-hemolysin antibodies in sera.
