Metabolism of 2-hydroxybiphenyl & 4-hydroxybiphenyl in albino mice

2-Hydroxybiphenyl and 4-hydroxybiphenyl are used as mould inhibitors for citrus fruits after picking. Swiss mice weighing initially 30 to 35 g were given a diet without or with 2-hydroxybiphenyl or 4-hydroxybiphenyl for 9 days. The mice were then killed. Liver homogenates were prepared and the 10 000 gn supernatant 0.5 ml was incubated for 1 h with 4-hydroxybiphenyl 25 mu mol, phosphate buffer, NADP+ 0.25 and ATP 0.254 mu mol. Urine from the treated mice contained 2-hydroxybiphenyl, dihydroxybiphenyl and their glucuronoside derivatives. The sole metabolite after incubation was 4,4-dihydroxybiphenyl.
