Schistosomula of Schistosoma mansoni, prepared in vitro or obtained from experimentally infected mice, were inoculated into the portal vein of normal albino mice; a control group of mice were infected with cercariae transcutaneously. Schistosomula from the lungs and livers of experimentally infected mice mostly remained in the portal system after inoculation; by contrast a significant percentage of in vitro prepared schistosomula migrated to the lungs, although the number of schistosomula in the portal system never dropped below about 50%. The schistogram pattern and the quantitative oogram indicated that the degree of worm development in the portal vein-inoculated group was higher than that in the group infected transcutaneously. More 6th-stage worms were recovered between 23 and 33 days after portal vein inoculation than after transcutaneous infection.
