In order to evaluate clinical usefulness of chromatographic separation of 17-ketosteroids (17-KS) their fractions were calculated in a group of healthy subjects and a group of patients with symptoms of virilization. Studies were carried out in basal conditions and during dynamic functional tests. The method facilitates differential diagnosis of adrenal and ovarian virilization, and enables distinguishing virilizing adrenocortical tumor from virilization due to bilateral adrenocortical hypertrophy. It allows precise diagnosis of the enzymatic defect in adrenogenital syndrome and helps appropriate selection of glucocorticoid dosage in its treatment.
