Funambulus pennanti died 48-72 hours after i/m or i/d injection of FMD virus, types O, A, C and Asia 1, and FMD virus was demonstrated in heart, liver, kidney, muscle, lung and spleen. The minimum infective dose was 200 mouse LD50. As squirrels did not become infected by contact with infected squirrels or after repeated oral administration of the virus, it is unlikely that they can play a significant role in transmission of the disease.
