The immunoelectrophoresis test as a useful immunodiagnostic method for amebiasis was evaluated. It was positive in > 90% of sera from subjects with amebic liver abscess and amebic dysentery. With serum samples from miscellaneous non-amebic disorders and apparently healthy subjects, no false positives were recorded. Several bands were obtained in immunoelectrophoretic slides but 1 prominent band located near the well was considered characteristic for amebiasis. The comparison with the indirect hemagglutination and gel diffusion methods revealed that though indirect hemagglutination is slightly more sensitive, immunoelectrophoresis was more discriminatory and coincided better with the clinical investigations.
