A survey is given of experimental results and some pertaining rationalizations in searching for antitumor compounds among acridine derivatives on the basis of studies of the structure-activity relationship. Most of the numerous works which led to the synthesis of the 1st Polish anticancer drug, Ledakrin, are mentioned. The 2nd section deals with spectroscopic and chemical studies which were used in structural elucidations of this compound.
