Susceptibility of Vandeleuria oleracea Bennet, 1832 (Rodentia, Muridae) to experimental infection with Kyasanur forest disease virus

V. oleracea, a common tree-hole rodent of Kyasanur forest disease (KFD) area, developed viremia subsequent to s.c. inoculation of 2.2-4.9 dex adult mouse LD50 of KFD virus suspension. The animals generally developed peak viremia 2-5 days later which leveled off by the 10th day. The virus level in blood during peak viremia varied from 4.5-6.6 dex/0.03 ml. The virus was demonstrable in brain, kidney, liver, spleen and lung tissues during viremia. In some cases the persistence of virus was demonstrable in brain and kidney tissues. The serum of all the V. oleracea tested after exposure neutralized KFD virus.
