Hypervitaminosis A in the dog

One preparation had retinyl palmitate 100 000 IU/ml and a multivitamin preparation had vitamin A 500 000 IU, ergocalciferol 75 000 IU and vitamin E 50 IU/ml. Ten crossbred puppies 4 to 6 weeks old were fed freely. One as control had no extra vitamin A, another had none for 72 days then 300 000 IU/kg bodyweight daily by mouth for 48 days, when it died. Two had weekly an intramuscular injection of 100 000 IU/kg for 10 weeks, had no sign of vitamin A toxicity then got vitamin A as palmitate 300 000 IU/kg by mouth daily for 88 days. Other groups of 2 had weekly injections for 14 weeks, of vitamin A 200 000 IU/kg as palmitate, or 100 000 or 200 000 IU/kg as the multivitamin preparation. Increased vitamin A in liver, clinical signs, radiological changes in bone and pathological changes in bone, liver and kidney are described. Toxic effect of excess vitamin A seemed less when the vitamin A was given as multivitamin preparation with vitamins D and E.
