Hypervitaminosis D and metastatic pulmonary calcification in a cow

A case is described of a Friesian cow 8 years old from a farm where a preventive programme against milk fever had been followed for some years. The cow had been given 107 iu cholecalciferol by muscle 3 days before calving. Despite all measures the cow became recumbent twice and had muscle weakness during the 2 weeks after calving. Treatment was with calcium borogluconate. Three weeks after calving the cow was killed. There was severe calcific arteriosclerosis and metastatic pulmonary calcification. The histological picture is described.
