During 3 days 48 male and female Wistar rats weighing initially 180 g, on a stock diet, were given cholecalciferol 7.5 and retinyl acetate 41 or retinoic acid 21.3 mu g/g body weight daily. Retinyl acetate and retinoic acid prevented osteoporosis but did not decrease calcium in blood compared with that in controls given cholecalciferol alone. Retinyl acetate decreased the severity of nephrocalcinosis. Retinoic acid decreased Ca deposition in the kidneys but had a slight nephrotoxic effect. Effects were not related to lipoperoxide production by renal cell mitochondria.
