This disease, previously only diagnosed in Kenya, has recently been reported in Tanzania. As the clinical and P.M. lesions are similar to those of several other diseases, diagnosis should depend on demonstration of the causal organism. This may be done directly in Giemsa-stained blood or spleen smears. However, parasitaemia may be absent when symptoms appear. It should therefore be verified by passage in susceptible cattle or sheep, with daily examination of blood smears for 10 days after inoculation. In the case reported from Tanzania this was not done.
