DNA was extracted from bovine leukocytes, digested with the restriction enzymes 'Bam HI', 'Sac I' and 'EcoRI', and purified by Southern's blot electrophoresis. This was followed by hybridization with heterologous DNA. The 'pBR 322' plasmid containing a 9.3 kb 'Sac I' insert (corresponding to the whole proviral genome of bovine leukosis virus) was used as the molecular probe. Preliminary tests on 18 serologically positive cows indicated that a certain molecular variant of leukosis virus was present in one herd.
