In 15 cows naturally infected with enzootic bovine leukosis, the immunodiffusion (ID) test showed a gradual decrease in serum antibody content. The reciprocal geometrical mean value of the positive reaction was gradually reduced to 3.3 (6 weeks before parturition) and then to 1.5 (at parturition), ultimately coming back to 3.2 (6 weeks after parturition); the weak positive reaction titres were 19.5, 9.1 and 22.0, respectively. Similar results were obtained from ELISA. Average spectrophotometrical values tended to decrease from 180.9 +or- 61.2 (6 weeks before parturition) to 140.2 +or- 58.7 (at parturition). They increased later to a mean value of 213.0 +or- 70.2 (6 weeks after parturition). No significant differences (p >0.05) were observed on comparing the values obtained at parturition against those obtained 6 weeks before and after calving. There were no undetectable antibody levels in cows at parturition. The cytomorphological tests showed non-significant drops in leukocyte counts at parturition.
