The paper includes details of 18 case reports. Clinical findings include paresis of the muscles of mastication, unilateral facial paresis, eyelid spasticity, exposure keratitis, medial strabismus, ataxia, circling, and nystagmus. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis is a valuable diagnostic aid together with an increase in leukocyte and protein values. Most leukocytes are large mononuclear cells or lymphocytes. Acid-base analysis can expect to show a metabolic acidosis. Haematology and serum biochemistry are not useful. The recommended treatment is penicillin in high intramuscular doses (44 000 IU/kg twice daily) for at least seven days with fluid and supportive therapy.
