Inoculation frequency and microbial characteristics of bacteria of the genus Klebsiella from adults and children with different gastrointestinal disease

Klebsiella colonization in adults and children with gastrointestinal disorders was compared with colonization in healthy subjects of the same ages. Morphological, cultural, biochemical and serological properties of the microorganisms were also considered. The colonization frequency of Klebsiella in patients and children is higher than in healthy people and adults, respectively. Some cultures differed from the typical Klebsiella pattern; significant differences between the strains isolated from different categories of people were not found. Serological identification of Klebsiella showed that all the studied cultures belonged to K. pneumoniae or K. aerogenes. K. pneumoniae (type K2) strains were predominant. In children K. aerogenes serotypes K31, K45, K46, and in adults serotypes K7, K30, K31 prevailed.
