In 972 adult patients the whole abdomen was examined as part of routine real-time US. Except for one patient, those with known gastro intestinal disease were excluded from this retrospective review. Twenty-six patients were found in whom US was the primary imaging modality diagnosing gastrointestinal lesions. There were malignant neoplasms in 12 patients, peptic ulceration in 4, ileus or obstruction in 7, and one each with gastritis, localised gastric perforation, Crohn's colitis and appendicitis. Clinical suspicion of the lesion was high in 11 patients and either absent or low in the rest.
