Polybiotrophy of bacteria of the genus Klebsiella

Under experimental conditions a great number of genus Klebsiella bacterium strains exhibited phytopathogenic characteristics, causing necrotic affection of the leaf laminas in a series of plants (20-60%) and inducing the reaction of supersensitivity on tobacco leaves (up to 89%). The L-asparaginase activity was found in 80% of the studied cultures of Klebsiella strains. No correlation was observed between the phytopathogenic characteristics and the enzyme production level. Phytopathogenic strains of K. rhinoscleromatis contained cryptic plasmids in an autonomous state. The same cultures revealed an entomopathogenic effect in respect of Mamestra brassicae.
