When representatives of the Acinotobacter genus are stored in distilled water, the total amount of cells increases in the first days; then during the first 3 mo. of storage, the cell concentration falls sharply. However, the survival rate is 1-2 orders higher than that following storage of the same cultures in the lyophilized state. With increasing storage time (up to 1 yr), the cell death rate decreases, being practically constant after 6 mo. Cultures stored in sealed ampules for 2 yr completely retain the capacity to accumulate biomass under submerged cultivation in synthetic media with ethanol as a single C source. Acinetobacter cultures thus can be preserved as cell suspensions in distilled water in sealed ampules at refrigerator temperature.
