S.c. injections of H3-corticosterone with a carrier made up of a mixture of lyophilized corticosteroids were given to rats, using distilled H2O for 5 animals and a phospholipid mixture in another 5 animals. Blood radioactivity levels during the 1st 80 min of injection were higher when the hormone vehicle was H2O, but radioactivity was 10 times higher after 80 min in the s.c. injection site when the hormone was administered in a phospholipid vehicle. There were no differences in the radioactivity of the brain, liver or kidneys as a result of the phospholipid vehicle. The phospholipid mixture may act by a mechanism other than that of slowing absorption.
