The pattern of phospholipid distribution in the brain, liver and muscle of 2 representative species of catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis and Clarias batrachus, was studied. Phosphatidylcholine contents (lecithin) was highest compared to other phospholipids in all the tissues studied. In the liver its content was high whereas the phosphatidylethanolamine and sphingomyelin content was the same as in the brain, liver and muscle in both species. Lysolecithin content was highest in muscle tissues of H. fossilis while it was highest in brain tissues of C. batrachus.
