Surgical methods for implantation of indwelling catheters in the carotid artery and portal and jugular veins of female pigs weighing 10 to 50 kg, also for the insertion of a gastric cannula, are described. The pig is housed in a metabolism stall and tethered by a steel collar. Patency is normally maintained for about 4 weeks. Insertion of a Foley catheter for urine collection is described also. Disinfectant and antibiotic are used.
