Following an introductory explanation of the problem, an animal experiment using 240 Wistar rats is reported, from which it was demonstrated that the therapeutic action of 150 mg/kg of ifosamide was improved to a small extent by the simultaneous administration of small doses of DMSO (0.6-2.4 g/kg). This result could not be statistically confirmed. Larger doses of DMSO (3-4.8 g/kg) impaired the therapeutic benefits. The possible causes of this finding are discussed. These larger doses of DMSO may strengthen the immunosuppressive action of ifosamide or the immune defense; or tumor antigenicity may have been directly influenced unfavorably by these large doses.
