Highly sensitive spectrophotometric and compensatory potentiometric methods, including use of artificial electron-receptors, were used to study electron and hydrogen transport systems in mitochondria of 2 helminths. Ferricyanide-reductase (using various substrates of the Krebs cycle), fumarate-reductase and ATPase were studied in mitochondria of Fasciola hepatica, and the first 2 in Ascaris suum. The study revealed a lack of the oxidation of tricarbonic acids occurring in the Krebs cycle, the presence of high fumarate-reductase activity (especially in A. suum) and ATPase activity, and specificity of the reaction of Mn++.
