The activity of certain S. sonnei enzyme systems isolated from patients was studied. All strains studied produced positive keratoconjuctival tests on guinea pigs. Hyaluronidase was produced in 63.3% of strains, hemolysin in 54.0% and plasmacoagulase in 13.6%. Correlation was established between Shigella hyaluronidase activity and hemolysin production. Slight DNase activity might be due to secretion of intracellular nucleases. The strains studied did not manifest lipase activity.
