In connection with the incidence of food poisoning in several districts of the German Democratic Republic in 1970-1971, 36 production batches of ripened-cream butter from a suspect butter factory were tested by 2 methods. Shigella sonnei strains, identical to those involved in the food poisoning cases, were isolated from 2 batches of the butter. Both detection methods (direct cultivation and phage titration) used were found to be equally effective.
