In vitro phospholipase A activity appeared to be markedly enhanced by crude and boiled extracts of Parascaris equorum, moderately increased by crude and boiled perienteric fluid of P. equorum, unaffected by boiled extract of Fasciola hepatica and compound 48/80, and partially inhibited by F. hepatica crude extract. However, crude extracts of both P. equorum and F. hepatica produced progressive and strong alkalification of the incubation medium, probably masking the true effect on the enzyme of these extracts. It is concluded that phospholipase A activity is stimulated most by crude extracts of F. hepatica and P. equorum and is directly proportional to changes in pH.
