Effect of some detergents on synaptic membranes

The detergents studied were sodium deoxycholate, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), Triton X 100, Tween 80, Lubrol WX and Cutscum. Synaptic membranes were derived from the cerebral cortex of rabbits. The fraction containing the synaptic membranes was recovered and concentrated for this study. Detergents could solubilize proteins of the synaptic membranes. When no detergent was used, only 8.1% of the proteins were soluble at a centrifuge speed of 38,000 rpm. This rate of solubility was enhanced by detergents 3-8 times. The effect of detergents may be to solubilize an enzyme activity.
