Regulation of the thirst mechanism and the hypothalamo-hypophysial antidiuretic system were studied. Total body water (TBW), extracellular water (ECW) blood volume (BV), plasma volume (PV), central blood volume (CBV) hematocrit (Hct), plasma osmolality (Posm), plasma protein (Ppr), Na (Pna) and C-(Pcl) concentrations, arterial blood pressure (mean, systolic, diastolic and pulse pressure), heart rate, plasma antidiuretic hormone level and osmotic reactivity of the antidiuretic system and of the thirst mechanism were measured in untreated dogs under resting conditions. The results indicated considerable individual variations in all the parameters measured except TBW, Pna and Posm. In the experiments repeated on the same animal hemodynamic parameters and osmotic reactivity of the thirst mechanism were relatively stable.
