Red cell osmotic fragility in the Beagle dog: normal values and diagnostic application

The red cell osmotic fragility curve was determined in 36 adult healthy Beagles of both sexes by means of a technique widely used in human diagnostic practice. It was found to differ slightly from the normal human curve, and by using the graph derived it is suggested that in the dog a new index (at 5% haemolysis) be employed to assess 'initial' haemolysis, in addition to the usual estimate of 50% haemolysis (mean corpuscular fragility). Examples of abnormal curves are given.
