Misdiagnosis of onchocerca nodules in an endemic area

Examination of surgical specimens from 5,000 Nigerians revealed 94 cases of Onchocerca nodules of which 25 had been wrongly diagnosed as cancers, benign tumours of lymph nodes. The biopsy site associated with the wrong diagnoses were the groin, chest, forehead and eyelid or brow and some of the nodules were intramuscular, painful or fixed. The need for doctors in developing countries to make more use of centralized histology facilities is stressed.
