Sixteen persons with microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti in their blood but living in a non-endemic area of India were treated with diethylcarbamazine at a dose of 6 mg/kg body weight for 12 days. Of the 14 who became negative, microfilaraemia appeared again in 6 during the 18 month follow-up period and, of 3 of the latter given a repeat course of the drug, only one remained negative. Mosquitoes were collected at monthly intervals from 16 houses in the localities where the microfilarial carriers lived but none was found infected.
