Study of the mode of action of diethylcarbamazine (DEC) on lipid metabolism in S. digitata showed that the worm has the necessary enzyme systems for the synthesis and degradation of major lipid components such as phospholipid, triacylglycerol and glycolipid. DEC decreases these lipid constituents by partially inhibiting synthesis and stimulating degradation. The loss of integrity of the cell membrane appears to be the primary factor responsible for the death of filarial parasites as a result of DEC treatment.
