Since urine collectable from the urethra is very small in amount (5-10 nl), special techniques and apparatus are required to measure Na and K in it. The He glow photometer is an apparatus for measuring the very small amounts of Na and K in the urine punctured from the urethra. This apparatus can measure samples below 1 nl. The layout, principles, and use of the apparatus are presented. A liquid sample is applied to the Ir filament. By electric discharges generated in the oscillator in He gas or in the glow chamber by UV rays, He is ionized. At the same time, the metals to be measured are evaporated by heating the Ir filament. The procedures after this are same as those for the Ramsay-Mueller flame photometer and are not presented.
