External sodium and potassium cotransport in erythrocytes under irradiation of a helium-neon laser

Single exposure of donor blood to helium-neon laser radiation with the flux density power of 0.5 mW .cntdot. cm-2 in vitro (3, 5, 10 min) modulates ouabain-resistant, firosemide-sensitive Na+ and K+ transport from red blood cells. Transmembrane transport of Na+ in the irradiated red blood cells in less suppressed by 0.5 mM of furosemide than in the intact cells. It is suggested that insignificant changes in the external concentration of Na+ during incubation of irradiated red blood cells in MgCl2-saccharose medium containing 0.1 mM of ouabain, evidence that the active mechanisms of transport do not participate in the cation redistribution.
