Sensitivity to sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim of Escherichia coli isolated from claves

E. coli strains isolated from 51 healthy market calves were tested for resistance to sulfamethoxazole (S), trimethoprim (T), or sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (S+T). No strains resistant to T or to the combined drug were found. Forty-five S resistant strains were isolated from 35 calves, no synergy between S and T was found in these strains. An attempt was made to transfer the resistance of the 45 S-resistant strains to E. coli strain K12. Synergy between S and T was found in E. coli K12 after transfer of resistance from 43 of the strains. Thirty-four of these strains transferred S-resistance to E. coli K12.
