A total of 571 isolates of Escherichia coli, obtained from faecal samples collected from four miniature sows, six miniature baby pigs, two normal conventional baby pigs, and 25 conventional baby pigs with diarrhoea, were typed with 13 phages isolated from human sewage. More than 61% of these isolates were lysed by one or more phages. Most samples contained one to five phage types, but samples from young pigs usually contained more types than did samples from adult pigs. Pigs with diarrhoea had phage type patterns similar to those found in normal pigs.
