Under the Medical Research Council Accreditation scheme, laboratory animals are regularly examined for mycoplasms, but A. laidlawii has never been isolated from mice, rats, hamsters or rabbits. In the past 18 months, however, this organism has been isolated from four different guinea-pig colonies (from the vagina or nasopharynx).
