In the course of investigations on the action of juvenile hormone derivatives on larvae of Pieris brassicae (L.) [cf. preceding abstract], a large number of treated larvae underwent an abortive supernumerary larval moult. These larvae were not able to cast the old head capsule properly, and it was found that the head appendages had more or less differentiated in the pupal-adult direction and that in many cases the appendages of the maxillary segment had produced structures normally restricted to the mandibular segment.
