In 1970-71, 8 herds of cattle with solid-manure and 11 with liquid-manure handling from 4 areas of Sweden were subjected to faecal examination for parasite larval stages. Faecal samples were taken from 559 cows, 1,116 yearlings and 307 calves. The following were found in cows, yearlings and calves, respectively: trichostrongylid eggs in 201, 590 and 24; Moniezia benedeni in 7, 25, and 2; Trichuris spp. in 0, 13, and 2; Nematodirus helvetianus in 0, 9 and 5; Capillaria spp. in 0, 5 and one; Strongyloides papillosus in 0, 0 and one; and Dictyocaulus viviparus in 0, 4 and 0. Seasonal and regional variation in excretion of trichostrongylid eggs is discussed; viable eggs and larvae were found in solid and liquid manure from herds in all regions but the frequency of viable eggs was higher in liquid manure (58 of 86 samples) than in solid (26 of 118). In both types, frequency of eggs and larvae was higher in winter and decreased in spring and summer. In pasture samples from plots fertilised with solid or liquid manure in October - June, infective larvae were equally frequent in the following grazing season but actual numbers were 22 larvae/kg herbage on plots fertilised with liquid manure as opposed to 10 larvae/kg on those fertilized with solid. The counts from fertilized plots were lower than those from naturally infected pasture on which yearlings had grazed.
