The occurrence, nature and inheritance of varietal resistance to nematodes in cereals is reviewed. The practical significance of nematode resistance in a particular host-nematode combination is evaluated and discussed in relation to host efficiency, host sensitivity, genetic control of resistance, and the presence of virulence in the nematode population.
