Resistance of Cotton to the Root-Knot Nematode, Meloidogyne incognita

In experiments made to elucidate the mode of resistance to Meloidogyne incognita in cotton, Clevewilt was used as the resistant variety and Deltapine as the susceptible. The roots of plants resistant to M. incognita had fewer and smaller galls and the females produced fewer egg masses containing fewer eggs than on susceptible plants. Many galls on resistant roots contained no nematodes when examined after 5 weeks growth. Invasion of roots of the resistant cultivar was equal to that of the susceptible and independent of the number of larvae in the inoculum. Fewer nematodes penetrated the roots of resistant or susceptible plants with 8 leaves than those with fewer. Reciprocal grafts of resistant and susceptible plants failed to confer resistance or susceptibility to the rootstock. [AS].
