Experiments were made to investigate the development of Meloidogyne incognita in resistant (Clevewilt) and susceptible (Deltapine) cotton varieties and to compare the histopathology of invaded roots. The numbers of larvae migrating from newly inoculated roots declined over a 16-day period and did not differ significantly between the 2 varieties. In susceptible roots the larvae penetrated, matured and reproduced in 14 days but in resistant roots development was greatly retarded. In the latter, invading larvae either failed to stimulate the nuclear activity necessary for the initiation of syncytia or, if syncytia formation began, it did not progress extensively nor reach a stage sufficient to support a developing female nematode, but had usually disintegrated by the 20th day. A few nematodes reached maturity and deposited eggs in resistant plants, having induced apparently normal syncytia. Some galls contained only fragments of nematodes or no detectable remains. Druse-formation was noted in galls of both cotton cultivars. Fissures in the cortex were noted in heavily invaded roots.
